Lesson 3 • The Ringing Noon Rule

Meet the Three Types of Tanween

When a short vowel is doubled at the end of a noun, it rings with a crisp hidden Noon sound (-an, -un, -in)!

Open classic book pages representing Kitaban
Tanween Fath • تَنْوِينٌ بِالفَتْح
Ends with "-an"Fatha + Hidden Noon (ـَ + نْ = ـً)
بًا

Double Fatha above the last letter + Helper Alif (ا)

Tanween Fath almost always needs a silent Helper Alif (ا) at the end (like بًا, كِتَابًا), EXCEPT when the word ends in Taa Marbuta (ةً) or Hamza (ءً)!

Tap to Hear Tanween Fath:
Calm ocean horizon under bright sky
Tanween Damm • تَنْوِينٌ بِالضَّمّ
Ends with "-un"Damma + Hidden Noon (ـُ + نْ = ـٌ)
بٌ

Double Damma placed directly ABOVE the last letter

Tanween Damm sits right on top of the final letter without any extra Alif. Your lips round for 'u' and immediately touch the roof of the mouth for 'n'!

Tap to Hear Tanween Damm:
Tall green trees in sunlight representing Shajaratin
Tanween Kasr • تَنْوِينٌ بِالكَسْر
Ends with "-in"Kasra + Hidden Noon (ـِ + نْ = ـٍ)
بٍ

Double Kasra placed directly BELOW the last letter

Two parallel diagonal strokes sit underneath the final letter. Smile gently for 'i' and close with a crisp 'n' bell sound: '-in'!

Slide 1 of 3 • The Invisible Noon

Hear the Noon, Never Write the Noon!

When children hear “kitaban”, they often want to write a real letter Noon (ن) at the end. Teach them: the second twin mark IS the Noon sound!

CORRECT SPELLING
قَلَمٌ

Written with Double Damma

WRONG SPELLING
قَلَمُنْ

Never write a real Noon!
